Mentoring

I aspire to be an active listener and objective insightful advisor.

One of the greatest benefits of progressing through my career is being able to use my knowledge to support others as they work towards their goals. It’s a joy to see mentees live their best lives.

My mentoring relationships usually start when mentees are in the final years of formal study or in the early stages of their career. I’m also connecting more often now with mentees who are mid-career and considering not only job change, but career change.

My conversations with mentees generally focus on holistic professional development and include topics such as setting goals and priorities, developing skills, career options, creating and nurturing a network, identifying resources, achieving work-life integration, and not losing sight of values and goals.

Each mentor-mentee relationship is unique. Sometimes we stay in touch for many years and other times just for a couple of weeks. How often we communicate varies too. These days I communicate with most mentees via phone and video call; meeting in-person is ideal but not easy if we are in different cities!

I mentor on an individual basis and also through these programmes:

  • TED Fellows Mentor
  • University of Melbourne Ask Alumni Mentor
  • University of Melbourne STEM Industry Mentor
